The Islamic Azad University, established in 1982, holds the distinction of being Iran's largest university in terms of both size and population. Globally, it ranks as the third most populous university, trailing only Indira Gandhi University in India and Anadolu University in Turkey. The university has seen five million students graduate from a variety of courses. It currently employs seventy thousand faculty members, including both full-time and part-time lecturers. In addition to its domestic branches, the university has expanded internationally with units in the United Kingdom, Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates, and Lebanon.

As per the statistics published in the Talayeh Daran Science Journal of Thomson Reuters (ESI) Essential Science Indicator, the Open University's scientific production ranking reached the 165th position in the last update on 10th of Khordad 1395, climbing 22 spots. Iran's scientific output score also increased by one point to 21. Earlier reports (end of February 2016) placed the Open University (FOF) at the 187th position at the Thomson Reuters Base, with Iran's ranking at 22. Azad University reported a significant number of recent articles, totaling 31,990. This achievement was made possible through the reformulation of some papers by the university's research and technology department and the increasing trend of scientific papers produced by the university departments.
