Tarbiat University, also known as Shahid Rajaee Public University, is located in Tehran and operates under the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology. It holds the unique distinction of being the only university in the country that trains technical staff for teachers. The Times Higher Education ranks it among the top 1,500 universities worldwide. The university was named after Mohammad Ali Rajaie, the second president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who was martyred in September 2001. Prior to this, it was known as the American School in Tehran. The university's history dates back to 1229, coinciding with the founding of Dar el-Fonoun. It was during this time that the first post-eminent teacher-training course in the country was initiated, along with other engineering and medical disciplines. In 1974, the American School commenced operations in Tehran. By 1980, under the supervision of the Ministry of Education's Office of Higher Schools of Technical and Vocational Schools, it was established as the Tehran Institute of Technology.
