Established in 1972 in Kerman, the university commenced its academic journey with an initial enrollment of 90 students in 1975. After the Revolution, it was renamed Mohammad Javad Bahonar University of Kerman in honor of Shahid Bahonar. The Council for Promoting Higher Education granted approval for the establishment of the Faculty of Science and the Technical College, to be led by the university's founder, Alireza Afzalipour. After negotiations between Pirraz Consulting Engineers and the university's founder, a contract was signed to initiate the university's construction projects. Subsequently, on August 19, 1974, the university's construction commenced on a sprawling 500,000 square meter plot in the southeastern part of Kerman. The university officially began its educational activities in 1975 with 90 students. Due to its educational and research accomplishments over the past 40 years, Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman is recognized as one of Iran's premier universities by the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology. Initially allocated 25,000 square meters for educational and research purposes, the university has expanded to over 230,000 square meters and boasts a student population exceeding 14,000 today.

Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman has achieved notable rankings both nationally and globally. According to the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution, it is ranked 99th and is among the top 10 universities in Iran, with industrial universities being ranked separately. In the Times World Rankings, the university has shown consistent performance. In 2019, it was ranked among the top 29 Iranian universities and was placed among the top 1,258 universities worldwide. The following year, it advanced to be among the top 40 Iranian universities and was listed among the top 1,396 universities globally. The Leiden International Rankings also recognized the university's excellence. In 2018, it was ranked among the top 23 Iranian universities and was placed among the top 938 universities worldwide. In 2019, it maintained its position among the top 26 Iranian universities and was listed among the top 963 universities globally. These rankings reflect the university's commitment to academic excellence and its significant contributions to higher education.

Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman is committed to enhancing the living conditions of its students and offers top-notch facilities. The university houses ten dormitories in total. Dormitories numbered 1 to 5 are designated for female students, accommodating up to 1700 individuals. Dormitories numbered 6 to 8 cater to both male and female students. Additionally, there are 1500 dormitory spaces specifically for female martyrs. This continuous effort to improve student living conditions underscores the university's dedication to its students.

The initial registration fee for students at the university is $50. An annual fee of $50 is also required. For those interested in the Persian language course, which caters to all levels from beginner to advanced, the fee is $300.
