Shiraz University, one of Iran's oldest universities, was established in 1946 as the Institute of Health with the primary goal of training specialists in medical sciences and medicine. Over time, it expanded to include various faculties and departments. Prior to the Pahlavi Revolution, it had a different name, but post-revolution, it was renamed Shiraz University.
With a history spanning over half a century, Shiraz University is among the country's largest and most significant universities and serves as a key research center. It boasts a community of over 16,000 students and 670 faculty members. The university offers a comprehensive range of programs, including 80 undergraduate, 183 master's, 102 Ph.D., and a professional Ph.D. As a comprehensive university, it plays a crucial role in training effective faculty members for research and higher education centers across the country. Currently, it comprises 16 faculties and one higher education center, with plans to open more faculties in the near future.
Shiraz University has successfully established several institutions, including Hormozgan, Bushehr, Yasuj, Shiraz Industrial University, Kazerun Higher Education Center, and Darab Natural Resources University. All these centers now operate independently. Additionally, Shiraz University oversees and evaluates 166 universities and higher education institutions in Fars province.

As per the latest report from Iran's Ministry of Interior Science, Shiraz University holds the 68th position in the Iranian university rankings and is ranked sixth among non-medical universities. Notably, it is ranked 751QS globally and 5th among Iranian universities. It is also recognized as the second-best comprehensive university in Iran, following Tehran University.

Non-Iranian students who do not achieve an acceptable score in the Persian language test are required to enroll in a Persian language course at the university. The fee for the first semester of this course is \$850.
The Central Library and Documentation Center of Shiraz University has a rich history dating back to 1364–1365. Initially part of the School of Science's Mulla Sadra Library, it later expanded to include references related to the humanities, social sciences, and educational sciences. These were transferred to the Mirzai Shirazi Library, which eventually became the Central Library and University Document Center.
The current library building spans three floors and covers an area of approximately 11,000 square meters. The first floor is a study hall; the second floor houses reference resources, collections of Persian, Arabic, and Latin books, demographics, the Educational Sciences Complex, the loan desk, and the reviewers desk. The third floor features periodicals, dissertations, databases, an order section, Professor Pope's Iran Department, the Ghadir and Amin Projects, the Mr. Abbaspour collection, the Children and Adolescents Library, and the University's Documentation Center.
In addition to the Central Library, which is the largest library at Shiraz University, there are nine other libraries within the university.
