Before 1368, the province's health was overseen by the Health District Administration. In 1369, the University of Nursing and Midwifery was established, admitting 14 nursing students at the Astijra building on Pasdaran Avenue, Ilam. By 1374, the institution expanded to include three additional schools - health, paramedical, and medical - and was promoted to Ilam University upon receiving a PhD in general degree.
In 1385, the university was further elevated to the Medical Department of the Department of Health and Assistant Department of Medical Network Health Care. It now encompasses five faculties: Health, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery, and Paramedical. The university employs 200 faculty members and serves more than 4,000 students, both formal and contractual.
The university offers a wide range of disciplines, including a PhD in Medicine, Master's programs in Microbiology and Anatomy, and Nursing Internal Surgery. It also provides education and expertise in several areas: Nursing, Environmental Health, Midwifery, Occupational Health, General Health, Laboratory Sciences, Anesthesia, and Operating Room. Additionally, it offers occupational administration in Laboratory Sciences, Environmental Health, Anti-Disease Treatment, Medical Emergencies, Professional Health, Anesthesia, and Operating Room. This diverse academic portfolio reflects the university's commitment to providing comprehensive education in health and medical sciences.

The initial registration fee for students at the university is $50. An annual fee of $50 is also required. For those interested in the Persian language course, which caters to all levels from beginner to advanced, the fee is $300.
