Following the 1979 Revolution, the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education initiated a policy to expand universities across Iran. In May 1962, the ministry's specialized medical board approved the establishment of the first medical science center in the northern part of the country, specifically in the Mazandaran region. The center was officially inaugurated in 1982, marking a significant milestone in February 2006 when it admitted its first medical student through the national examination. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Minister of Culture and Higher Education. In the years that followed, medical education in the region saw considerable progress. The Rasht School of Medical Sciences was established in 1365 (1986), followed by the Sari School of Medical Sciences in 1367 (1988), and the Gorgan School of Medical Sciences in 1371 (1992). As part of Iran's ongoing development of medical education, the Ministry of Health and Medical Education was established in Babol. This was facilitated by the enactment of the "Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education" law, which led to the integration of medical group faculties from the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education into the Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, under the Ministry of Health and Medical Education. After several years, the central organization relocated to Mazandaran, culminating in the independence of Babol University of Medical Sciences in 1370 (1991).
