Established in 1364 with the approval of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, Birjand Medical University officially began its journey in 1365, admitting 50 medical students and 30 nursing students. In 1372, the Ministry of Health and Medical Education elevated the status of Birjand University of Medical Sciences (UHT) to a University of Medical Sciences. This recognition was in response to the success of Birjand's new faculty of science, which ranked first in the 1371 National Comprehensive Examination of Basic Medicine (MPPT). Dr. Ghazanfar Frezanfar was appointed as its Director.
Between 1371 and 1378, the students achieved first place five times and second place once in the General Examination of Basic Medicine. The university currently comprises eight faculties and one teacher, serving 2,757 students across 35 faculties offering undergraduate, master's, and doctorate degrees. It employs 197 faculty members.

The initial registration fee for students at the university is $50. An annual fee of $50 is also required. For those interested in the Persian language course, which caters to all levels from beginner to advanced, the fee is $300.
