Before the Islamic Revolution, Kurdistan lacked universities and medical schools. However, in 1986, the Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences was founded. It commenced its operations with departments focusing on Nursing and Laboratory Sciences. Presently, the university has an enrollment of 2,551 students, a faculty comprising 252 lecturers and 296 members, and a noteworthy scholarly output which includes 951 articles published in domestic journals and conferences, 475 of which are in newspapers and 476 in conference papers. Additionally, the university has produced 2,694 internationally accredited articles. Notably, it is licensed and publishes five specialized journals.

Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences has achieved several significant milestones: - Dr. Shokrollah Zandi, a neurosurgeon and spinal surgeon, successfully performed a three-level neck disk operation for the first time in Kurdistan. - Dr. Hassan Mairi, a cancer surgery specialist, performed the first language cancer surgery using a harmonic ultrasonic device in Kurdistan. - Dr. Hassan Mairi also conducted the first operation for breast cancer using a Gamma Probe Machine in Kurdistan. - Students engaged in the Gifted Medicine Program participated in the 47th Annual Response Course, which is ranked by the Times Rating System. This system evaluates academic centers based on research, supervision, development, and education. - Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences achieved impressive rankings in four fields in the Times Rating System: it ranked 101-200 in the field of health and well-being and quality education, 401-600 in the field of gender equality, and 1000-801 in the field of participation in achieving sustainable development goals at the international level. These accomplishments reflect the university's commitment to academic excellence and innovation.

Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences provides a variety of accommodation options through its 13 dormitories. One of these is a married dormitory, comprising two locations: one with 8 units on Adab Street and another with 32 units in Baharan. Currently, these facilities house 40 married students and their families. Two additional dormitories are rental properties leased from the university jihad. The university oversees all administrative tasks for these dormitories, which are located both on campus and within the city. The university also offers a boarding house for specialized students. Five of the dormitories are designated for male students who are not currently enrolled in school, while five others, located on campus, are reserved for female students. In total, the university's dormitories accommodate 600 male students, 800 female students, and 40 married students. The cost of these dormitories is covered by the university until graduation. After graduation, the costs are paid through the Student Welfare Fund, providing financial relief for the students.

The initial registration fee for students at the university is $50. An annual fee of $50 is also required. For those interested in the Persian language course, which caters to all levels from beginner to advanced, the fee is $300.
