Golestan University of Medical Sciences, located in Gorgan city, was established in 1991. Following Golestan's independence in 1996, it became a separate entity from the University of Mazandaran, with a primary focus on delivering medical care to the people of Golestan province. The university also plays a crucial role in providing educational services to students across various medical disciplines at different academic levels. Currently, the university is under the leadership of Saeed Gul Firouzi. With a student body of 3,949 and a faculty comprising 333 members, the institution has made significant contributions to the academic and scientific community. Notably, it has published 1,072 scientific articles in national journals and organizations, and it is the proud owner and publisher of five specialized journals. Additionally, the university has organized five conferences and produced a remarkable 2,838 internationally recognized articles through its research center.

Golestan University of Medical Sciences has achieved significant recognition in various areas. It is ranked among the top Iranian universities, holding a position between 351 and 400 in the Times Higher Ranking. The university's expedition team also secured third place at the Startup Weekend Health and Tourism event, hosted by Jahrom University of Medical Sciences. In 2023, Golestan University of Medical Sciences was recognized as the top university in Iran by the Times. This achievement was made possible through the concerted efforts of the International Strategic Committee for University Internationalization and the support of university presidents. The ranking is based on 13 performance indicators that evaluate an institution's performance in four key areas: education, research, knowledge transfer, and international perspective. As a result, Golestan University of Medical Sciences not only stands as the best university in Iran but also holds a global ranking between 351 and 400.

The university's Central Library, inaugurated in February 1388, is situated on Shahid Beheshti Street. Recognizing the importance of libraries in academic institutions, it provides services to clients and scholars. The library is currently in the process of establishing itself in the University Central Library Building, which is under design and construction. Once completed, it will offer its services in a more spacious and suitable environment. The primary goal of the central library is to provide and organize resources and information for researchers, ensuring easy access to these resources. The Nutrition Department at the university is committed to promoting food safety and the overall health of students. It aims to provide and distribute healthy food, maintaining high standards of hygiene and nutritional value. The department offers food items, storage, baking, and distribution services to students free of charge. Students can reserve meals for the following day until 14:00 a.m., and they have until 10:00 a.m. on Fridays to reserve their meals for Saturday.

The initial registration fee for students at the university is $50. An annual fee of $50 is also required. For those interested in the Persian language course, which caters to all levels from beginner to advanced, the fee is $300.
