The University of Gilan was established in 1953, following approval from the Council for the Development of Higher Education. It was founded under an agreement between the governments of Iran and former West Germany. The university began its educational activities in 1977, admitting 155 students across nine academic disciplines. In 1977, the Rasht School of Management and the Higher School of Commerce, the only higher education centers in Gilan province at the time, were merged with the University of Gilan. The university continued its educational activities until the end of the 1979 academic year, accommodating 605 students across 14 faculties. Following the Islamic Revolution, the University of Gilan continued its academic activities independently, without reliance on Germany, and with approximately 500 students. As higher education expanded in the country, various schools were established, including those for basic sciences, technical studies, agriculture, humanities, and medicine. Subsequently, the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, the Faculty of Natural Resources, and the Faculty of Architecture and Arts were also established.

Gilan University has consistently ranked high in various university rankings. According to the latest Shanghai rankings, it was placed eighth among comprehensive universities in 1393. In the 2019 Times Ranking, it secured the sixth position among universities in Iran. The university is renowned for its quality scientific production, as evidenced by a significant number of scientific documents. These include international collaborations, scientific papers, research projects, top student theses, discoveries, and printed scientific works. The Deputy Research Department of Guilan University maintains a record of this information, which is also reflected in its annual research paper. The faculty at Guilan University includes outstanding professors and researchers who enjoy a prominent reputation both nationally and internationally. Some faculty members have been recognized among the leading scientists of Iran and the top one percent of the world's science producers. Among the most notable is Hassan Ibrahimzadeh, a distinguished member of the Universiti Honar, who has gained international recognition. Gilan University publishes more than 20 major scientific and artistic journals, some of which are in English. The university also publishes numerous scientific books annually. Furthermore, many of its students have achieved outstanding results in nationwide exams and student Olympiads, adding to the university's accolades. This consistent performance underscores Gilan University's commitment to academic excellence and innovation.

Gilan Harbor is now home to several research centers. These include the Khazar Basin Research Institute and the Gilan Institute. In addition, the Silk Land and Cream Test Research Groups are also located here. The Center of Science Pole of Sport and Health, which was archived on January 30, 2021, is another notable center. The Scientific Center for Mathematical Optimization is also part of this network of research centers. All these centers are affiliated with Gilan University, contributing to its reputation as a hub for scientific research and innovation.

The initial registration fee for students at the university is $50. An annual fee of $50 is also required. For those interested in the Persian language course, which caters to all levels from beginner to advanced, the fee is $300.
